Volunteer at Rialto Arthouse Cinema
Summer 2023 - Present
In the summer of 2023, I started volunteering at Rialto Arthouse Cinema in Amsterdam's De Pijp neighborhood. What began as a way to get closer to the films I love has turned into one of the most rewarding experiences I've had in Amsterdam.
Why Rialto?
Rialto isn't your typical multiplex. It's Amsterdam's premier arthouse cinema, showing the kind of films that challenge, provoke, and stay with you long after the credits roll. These are the films that matter—the ones that push boundaries, tell stories from unique perspectives, and remind you why cinema is an art form.
As someone who's passionate about film (you can see my taste on Letterboxd), I wanted to be part of a community that celebrates thoughtful filmmaking. Rialto attracts exactly the kind of audience you'd hope for: curious, engaged viewers who come for film as art, not just entertainment.
The Experience
Every two weeks, I'm behind the bar serving drinks and watching the pre-show energy of anticipation. There's something special about the atmosphere before an arthouse screening—conversations about previous films, excited discussions about what's coming up, and that particular buzz when a director or cast member is present for a Q&A.
The audience at Rialto is genuinely special. These are people who seek out challenging films, who appreciate subtlety and nuance, and who understand that the best cinema often comes from voices and perspectives that mainstream Hollywood overlooks. Working behind the bar, you get to observe this community and occasionally join the conversations about what makes a film truly exceptional.
The Community
What I love most about volunteering at Rialto is being part of a team that's genuinely passionate about film. From the programmers who curate the screenings to the other volunteers, everyone is there because they believe in the mission of bringing exceptional cinema to Amsterdam.
The cinema regularly hosts festivals, special screenings, and events that bring together filmmakers and audiences. Being behind the scenes for these events gives you a deeper appreciation for the work that goes into creating a space where film culture can thrive.
Film Culture in Amsterdam
Amsterdam has a rich film culture, and Rialto sits at the heart of it. Located in the vibrant De Pijp area, it's both a neighborhood cinema and a cultural destination. The programming consistently features films that you won't find elsewhere—recent releases from acclaimed international directors, restored classics, and works from emerging filmmakers who deserve wider recognition.
Whether it's the latest from the Cannes winners, a retrospective of a master filmmaker, or a documentary that sheds light on an important issue, Rialto's programming always feels carefully considered and culturally relevant.
Why It Matters
In an era of streaming and algorithm-driven recommendations, places like Rialto are more important than ever. They create space for communal viewing experiences, for films that demand the big screen, and for the kind of programming that challenges audiences rather than simply giving them what they already know they want.
Volunteering here has deepened my appreciation for both cinema and community. It's reminded me that the best art often happens when passionate people come together around something they believe in.
